How far is Salou from Barcelona?

It's just over 100km south, about 1h15 to 1h30 by car. There's also a direct regional train from Barcelona Sants to Salou PortAventura station in about an hour and a half, then a 20 minute walk or a short taxi to the seafront, which spares you the parking stress on a festival night.

Where should we stand for the August 15 fireworks?

The Gran Castell de Focs fires over Passeig Jaume I at 11pm, and the promenade fills up well before that. Get there by 10pm for a spot at the railing, or watch from further along Platja de Llevant, where it's less crowded and you still get the whole sky.

What's the best age for these last few nights?

The sea procession and the fireworks land well with about age 4 and up. The real constraint is the clock: nothing headline starts before 9pm and the fireworks run close to midnight. The late afternoon craft sessions at the Estació del Carrilet suit roughly ages 4 to 12 and are a good way to fill the wait.

Can we do this as a day trip?

Yes, and with only a couple of days left that's the realistic option, since August rooms on the Costa Daurada are long gone. Arrive mid to late afternoon, catch the 5:30pm kids' workshop, eat on the seafront and stay for the evening event. If you stay for the August 15 fireworks you won't be back in Barcelona much before 1am, so factor that in.

Les Nits Daurades is Salou's summer festa major, filling the town center and seafront with two weeks of free concerts, parades, traditional dances and family shows from August 1 to 15. The closing stretch is the biggest of the run: a Mecano tribute concert at Plaça de les Comunitats Autònomes on August 13, the Vespreig evening market with music at the Espigó del Moll on August 14, and a final night on August 15 with the Santa Maria del Mar sea procession at 9:15pm followed by the Gran Castell de Focs fireworks over Passeig Jaume I at 11pm. Free craft workshops for kids run most late afternoons at the Espai d'Infància in the old Estació del Carrilet, through August 14. Earlier in the festa the town folded the August 12 total solar eclipse into the program, with expert talks, kids' science workshops, beach yoga and viewing from Ponent and Llevant beaches.
