What you need to know
- Start with the Playmobil nativity at Espai Albert Musons in Gràcia, a huge scene built from the toy figures kids already know (2025: Dec 10 to Jan 9)
- An easy Gothic Quarter loop: City Hall, the Cathedral cloister, Casa dels Entremesos and Santa Caterina market sit within about 10 minutes' walk of each other, all free
- Four living nativities in December, with neighbors in costume acting out the scenes (2025: El Carmel, Torre del Suro, La Marina and Navas)
About
Around Christmas, Barcelona fills with pessebres, the Catalan nativity scenes: whole miniature villages of moss, rivers, mills and shepherds built around the manger. City Hall, the Cathedral, markets and neighborhood clubs each build one. The game every local kid knows is spotting the caganer, a little squatting figure hidden in almost every one. In the Cathedral cloister, kids also count the 13 white geese that live there.
