How do we get to each fair?

Girona is the easy one by train: about 40 minutes on the high-speed train from Barcelona Sants, and the fair spreads through the city center. The other four are small villages where a car is simplest: Viladrau, Calaf and Sant Feliu Sasserra are each about 1 hour 15 minutes away, and Pratdip, near Cambrils, about 1 hour 45 minutes. In 2025 Sant Feliu Sasserra asked for a €2 donation per car to park.

Which ones suit little kids best?

Calaf's pumpkin fair is short and gentle: one square, one morning, and a paint-your-pumpkin workshop. Viladrau is an easy chestnut day out. Sant Feliu Sasserra had a family puppet show and a clue game for kids in 2025, but its evening scenes act out a witch trial and a hanging. Pratdip has puppets and storytelling, and also a scary alley and a new House of Fear that are best skipped with small children.

Walking around all five fairs is free. You pay for food and a few extras: in 2025 Pratdip charged €2 to €5 for its shows and the scary alley. In Girona most of the street program is free, and funfair rides are paid.

Which fairs fall on the Halloween weekend?

Pratdip Llegendari runs Sat Oct 31 and Sun Nov 1. Sant Feliu Sasserra holds a witch night on Oct 31 and its Witches' Fair on Sun Nov 1. Calaf's pumpkin fair is held on Nov 1, All Saints' Day, each year. Girona's Fires also run through Nov 1.

About

Late October is harvest time in the towns inland from Barcelona, and each one celebrates in its own way. In the Montseny the chestnut is the star: they roast over open fires, guides lead walks through centuries-old chestnut groves, and for generations Barcelona's street chestnut sellers wanted only Viladrau's. Out on the plains, farmers bring their biggest pumpkins to be weighed, and children paint smaller ones to take home. Other towns lean on their legends. About 400 years ago, women in these hills were tried as witches, and today whole villages dress up to retell those stories with puppets, street theater, music and fire. For kids it sits somewhere between a fairy tale and a history lesson, and it makes for a very Catalan way into Halloween.
