Most of the festival is free and walk-in: the balloon exhibitions, the launches, the kids' workshops, and the Night Glow. The only thing you pay for is going up in a balloon, and those flights have to be booked in advance.

The paid flights are the only way up, and they sell out, so reserve early through the festival's flight booking page. If you just want the experience without the cost, the tethered balloons (which rise a short way on a rope) and the mass launches are free to watch up close.

When is the best time to go with kids?

Balloons launch around dawn and again in the late afternoon, when the wind is calmest, so the late-day launch is the easier one with kids. If you can stretch past bedtime one night, the Night Glow, where the balloons light up after dark to music, is the real showstopper.

How do we get there from Barcelona, and does it work as a day trip?

Igualada is about an hour west of Barcelona by car, and it makes an easy day trip. Try to arrive before a scheduled launch, bring sun cover and water since it's an open field in July, and a stroller is fine on the grass.
