About
Once a year, for La Mercè, Barcelona opens 46 museums and monuments for free, and 40 of them on the same day, Thursday September 24. Almost all of them need no ticket and no booking. Just walk in. CosmoCaixa is the one to beat for kids, with a real Amazon rainforest indoors, but it is also the one most families have already been to. A free day is the chance to try the places that rarely make the list. Via Sepulcral is a sunken garden of Roman tombs right in the Gothic Quarter (Thursday morning only). The Music Museum at L'Auditori has hundreds of instruments from around the world. And on the weekend, the Funeral Carriage Collection at Montjuïc cemetery sets up a Playmobil display, with a free tour at noon. For boat lovers, the Maritime Museum has a full-size royal galley.
